Generic Proscar 5 mg

General information

Generic Proscar (Finasteride) is prescribed to treat symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia in men with an enlarged prostate. By shrinking the enlarged prostate, Finasteride reduces urinary blockage and improves the flow of urine. Generic Proscar (Finasteride) is a type of steroid reductase inhibitor. It works by reducing the amount of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. This makes the prostate gland smaller, which helps to relieve urinary problems. 

Dosage

The dosage of Generic Proscar (Finasteride) prescribed to each patient will vary. Always follow your physician’s instructions and/or the directions on the prescription drug label. Take Generic Proscar (Finasteride) with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food.

Precautions

• Proscar may cause drowsiness or dizziness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Proscar with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it. 
• Proscar may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting; alcohol, hot weather, exercise, or fever may increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these effects. 
• Proscar may increase the risk of certain birth defects, including abnormal formation of genitalia in male fetuses. Proscar is coated to prevent contact with finasteride while handling undamaged tablets. The coating is not effective if the tablets are damaged, broken, or crushed. Women who are pregnant or may be pregnant should avoid contact with damaged, broken, or crushed tablets. If contact occurs, tell your doctor at once. 
• Proscar may interfere with certain lab tests, including PSA tests. Be sure your doctor and lab personnel know you are taking Proscar . 
• Proscar should not be used in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed. 
• PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING: Proscar may cause harm to the fetus. It is not known if Proscar is found in breast milk. Proscar is not approved for use in women. 

Possible side effect

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome: 

• Decreased sexual desire or ability. Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur: 
• Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); breast enlargement, lumps, pain, or tenderness; nipple discharge; testicular pain.

Drug interaction

Usually drug interactions occur when it is taken with another drug or with food. Before you take a medication for a particular ailment, you should inform the health expert about intake of any other medications including non-prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines that may increase the effect of Generic Proscar, and dietary supplements like vitamins, minerals and herbal, so that the doctor can warn you of any possible drug interactions.

Do let your doctor know if you smoke, consume alcohol or caffeinated drinks, or use illegal drugs as these may interfere with the action of your medication. Make sure to inform your doctor of any medical conditions you may have, or any family history of medical problems. Do not start or stop using any medicine without consulting your doctor.

Missed dose

If your physician has instructed or directed you to take Generic Proscar (Finasteride) medication in a regular schedule and you have missed a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the doses unless otherwise directed.

Overdose

Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an Overdose of Generic Proscar, seek medical attention immediately.

Storage

Store Generic Proscar (Finasteride) at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep this medicine out of the reach of children and away from pets.
